Micro/nanostructures are being used to realize efficient detection, emission, and manipulation of photons. For detection purposes, the confinement of light using micro/nanostructures is used to enhance the sensitivity of detection schemes. Confinement of light at the subwavelength scale has also been reported and used to miniaturize functional microstructures on a chip. High-quality and miniaturized light sources that can be integrated into a chip and used in combination with functional microstructures are being investigated. In this talk, we will report micro/nanostructures sustaining optical modes that can control thermal emission, visible and near-infrared absorption, and stimulated emission, and demonstrate their applications in lasing and sensing. Particularly, metallic structures supporting surface plasmon polaritons and all-dielectric structures supporting guided Bloch surface waves will be used to demonstrate integrated coherent light sources fabricated by top-down processes. Solution-processed microfabricated lasers will also be presented.
