Photo-thermal-fluidic coupled transport in nano-microscales: aspects of energy conversion and laser-assisted microfabrication

Abstract

This presentation composes studies on the photo-thermal energy conversion enhancement and effective utilization with applying nanomaterials. The first section is emphasized on the development of a microscale solar-thermal reformer for hydrogen production with nanocatalyst Preliminary experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of the reformer. The second example is a study on silicon nanowires as a potential solar energy absorber. It was observed that the reflectivity is lower in the visible range but higher in the infrared range comparing to the plain silicon wafer. A drying experiment and a theoretical calculation were carried out to evaluate the effects of the trade-off between scattering properties at different wavelengths. In addition, the development of novel microfabrication technologies based on laser-induced photo-thermal-chemical reactions will be introduced. Silver-based microstructures are directly synthesized and patterned using laser to initiate the reduction reaction in the metallic ion precursor. The conductive line shows great electrical conductivity and mechanical robustness. This fast, environmentally benign and cost-effective technique provides a way for manufacturing flexible electronics. Numerical and theoretical analyses were also carried out to investigate the coupled photo-thermal-fluidic transport phenomena during the process.
