Interdisciplinary Research for Incubating Cross-industry Leadership

Abstract

Interdisciplinary research is a mode of research that integrates information, techniques, tools, perspectives and concepts from two or more specialized academic disciplines to either improve fundamental understanding or solve complex problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline or research area. This kind of research allows students to gain a deeper practical knowledge and enables them to think across boundaries which is increasingly important for success in the real world. It also helps them develop their collaborative skills while working with others and prepares them for careers in new and emerging fields. The MANST lab at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has long recognized the value of performing interdisciplinary research. Our main research areas include Biosensors, Micro and Nano Electromechanical Systems, Tactile sensing, Roll-to-Roll imprinting and IoT technologies. Accomplishing research in such diverse fields involves collaboration between teachers and students from different departments ranging from Mechanical to Electrical and Material Engineering, Polymer Science and Biotechnology. We strongly believe that this research approach provides a competitive edge as knowledge creation and new innovations often occur at the interface of disciplines.
