Abstract

Cornea is a very small structure in the eye, but it holds the key to clear vision. Unfortunately, the cornea may have kinds of diseases, for example keratoconus, and the cornea may be operated, for example the refractive surgery. Most of the techniques for corneal examination nowadays are based on morphology analysis by applying tonometer measurement and topographic map. Only very few of them are based on quantitatively analysis, especially the application of the biomechanical parameters. The biomechanical changes of the cornea are not only the cause of retinopathy, but also effect the measurement of the intraocular pressure, which is one of the key symptom to judge the glaucoma. Thus getting the biomechanical parameters with the non-invasive modalities is necessary. In this talk, the speaker will introduce two approaches helping to detect the corneal Young’s modulus,  a novel waveform analysis used to analyze the characteristics of keratoconus and of surgery cornea, and the eyeball dynamics being a key theory to develop the wearable tonometer. Parts of the fundamental theories, such as the wave theory and shell analysis, will be introduced to connect with the corneal models. In vitro and in vivo studies also will be introduced. All the corneal biomechanical properties provide much more invaluable and accurate data in clinical medicine of ophthalmology.
