Title: Computing Trend for AI : From Tera-scale to Exa-scale.

人工智慧運算大趨勢 : 邁向百萬兆次計算.

Abstract

Three major factors contribute to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) : big data, algorithms and computing power. This talk will focus on the computing power required for AI.

Nowadays the development of AI computing impacts IC industry. We are moving to Exa-scale computing, which means computing systems capable of handling up to a million of trillion calculations. We will discuss on AI computing demand, and in particular on the power efficiency issue. This talk will also introduce how AI shapes the future of electronics industries and global economy.

人工智慧的發展迅速，衝擊 IC電子資訊產業。人工智慧崛起有三大要素：大數據, 演算法 與 運算力。本演講針對人工智慧所需的運算力，深入探討。

人工智慧所需運算量龐大，將驅使我們從兆等級的運算(Tera-scale computing)，邁向百萬兆等級運算(Exa-scale computing)的新紀元，也代表著龐大的IC與電子資訊產業的機會。將會由應用的需求，分析人工智慧為何需要龐大的運算，並說明運算能源效益(power Efficiency)。除了描述人工智慧如何型塑IC電子資訊產業的未來，也對人工智慧未來可能的發展方向，作概括性的分析介紹。

Brief Biography

Dr. Bor-Sung Liang received his MS and Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Electronics, National Chiao Tung University in 1996 and 2002 respectively, and EMBA degree from the College of Management, National Taiwan University in 2013. Dr. Liang is Chief Technical Consultant, Intelligent Devices Business Group at Mediatek,  and was director of Corporate Strategy at Mediatek, vice-president of Sunplus Core Technology and Special Assistant to the CEO of Sunplus. He is also the inventor of 80 patents worldwide (TW 22; US 18; CN 19; UK 10; DE 6; JP 5).  Dr. Liang received several important awards from Taiwan for his work, including: Ten Outstanding Young Persons, Outstanding Youth Innovator Award (Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan), Outstanding IT Elite Award (Information Month, Taiwan), K.T. Li Distinguished Young Scholar Award (ACM Taipei Chapter and IICM) and three times of the National Invention Awards (one gold medal and two silver medals; Intellectual Property Office, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan).
