Bio-Sensor Applications on Wearable and Mobile Devices

Abstract

Bio-sensing technology is gradually stepping into our daily life with its unique advantages on wearable and mobile devices: Non-invasive, continuous monitoring and easy to use. MediaTek debuted the 1st bio-sensing chip in 2015 and 1st bio-sensing module in 2017.However the way from design, device to system integration is full of challenges. PPG (Photoplethysmography) and ECG (Electrocardiography) are two essential vital signals which are integrated into our single chip and module. With synchronized PPG and ECG signals, PWTT (Pulse Wave Transit Time) is measurable and it could be an indication of blood pressure. Motion artifact and ambient light degrade the signal quality most of the time and a simple example will be demonstrated. A few system design considerations will be introduced to mitigate motion artifact and ambient light interference. Finally the clinical correlation is a key step for commercialization which is most challenged in the last mile.

Profile

Pao-Cheng (Steven) Chiu received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 1995 and 1997, respectively.

From 1999 to 2005, he was a design manager at Realtek Inc., HsinChu, Taiwan, where he worked on gigabit Ethernet, 10G base-T mixed-signal and analog front end design. Since 2005, he has been working on high-speed serial interface, phase-lock loop, CDR and digital image analog front end at MediaTek Inc., HsinChu, Taiwan. He is currently a deputy director managing a design group working on mixed-signal CMOS circuit development for advance process, digital calibration and data converters design especially for LTE and WiFi wireless communication application. Recent additional working activities include wearable SOC and bio-sensing applications.
