its applications in engineering practice

Abstract
Quantification of biofluids holds the promise of investigating the etiology and pathogenesis of human cardiovascular diseases and paving the way for identifying potentially medical treatments. Driven by this motive we employed a flow visualization method named particle image velocimetry (PIV) to delve into the complex interplays between the blood flow induced wall shear stress (WSS) and compliant vessel walls in the context of fluidic dynamics and clinical relevance with a specific aim to assess the blood flow in pathological conditions. In today's talk the basic concept of PIV will be introduced briefly with selected test cases demonstrated using the in vivo and in vitro models from both experimental and numerical perspectives. By accurately evaluating the hemodynamics using PIV with high spatial and temporal resolutions, it is possible to recognize the role of time-varied WSS in major blood clotting and hemorrhagic problems such as stroke and aneurysm. In the second half of the talk I will describe our recent efforts to microscale flow manipulation. We have engineered artificial cilia inside a microchannel aiming to facilitate fluid mixing and propulsion on a portable lab chip platform for a quick blood assessment. The talk will conclude with a discussion of potentially biomedical applications using PIV measurement.
